Bowflex SelectTech 1090 Adjustable Dumbbell

The Bowflex SelectTech 1090 is a very good adjustable dumbbell. It has only one major shortcoming, it is expensive. But you get what you pay for.

The Bowflex SelectTech 1090 adjustable dumbbell covers an impressive weight range, from 10 to 90 pounds, in 5 pound increments. This allows you to use them for a wide variety of exercises. Changing weights is quick and easy, just put the dumbbell into the base and turn the dial.

The Bowflex SelectTech 1090 is expensive but it is still cheaper than buying a whole set of dumbbells and of course it does not need much space. One practical problem is that the SelectTech 1090 is bulky. It does take some time to get use to them.

The Bowflex SelectTech 1090 adjustable dumbbells are covered by a 2 year warranty on the parts (including handle assembly, weight plates and base assembly) and one year warranty on labor.

The customers have given the Bowflex SelectTech 1090 Adjustable Dumbbell an average rating of 4.5 out of 5. Most of the buyers were happy with their Bowflex SelectTech 1090 Adjustable Dumbbells. High quality, huge weight range and easy change weights were common comments. Many of the users said that the dumbbells are bulky but that didn’t prevent anyone from using them. But it can take some time to get used to them.

A few of the customers had not paid attention the description and bought only one dumbbell, which of course wasn’t what they wanted.

Here are some typical customer remarks:

“I always wanted a set of dumb bells but never had the room. These are a simple solution. They take a little to get used to as they are a little wider than your typical dumb bell but does every thing I need them to do and saves a ton of space in what little room I have. I recommend to anyone.”

“These are worth the money. It is easy to transition between weights. I can store them in a corner in the room so when Im not using them they are not in the way. Having weight all the way up to 90lbs allows you to do any work out. I would recommend anyone who wants to start a lifting regimen”

“I have owned the Bowflex Selecttech 1090 Dumbbells for almost a year, use them 3 -4 times a week and so far they have held up well. And since the unit adjusts from 10-90 pounds I do not anticipate ever needing another pair of dumbbells. If you looking for an affordable, adjustable, dumbbell look no further than the Bowflex Selecttech 1090 Dumbbell.”

“This product is exactly as stated and even provides the more adjustment then expected. You can actually make much smaller increments than expected by making an unequal weight distribution (30 on one side and 40 on another=35 pound dbl). As other reviewers have stated, this item is bulkier than the average dumbbell and you have to baby it a little when setting it down, however it is a killer space saver and is just waiting to be used.”

Universal Power-Pak 445 Ajustable Dumbbells

The Universal Power-Pak 445 Adjustable Dumbbells are very good for light to medium weight training. The dumbbells cover the range from 4 to 45 pounds, in 5 pound increments. The price is very attractive but do you get value for your money?

Quite clearly the Universal Power-Pak 445 dumbbells offer you very good value for the money. They are easy to use and are of good quality. This is a very good pair of adjustable dumbbells for beginners and intermediate users.

It is very easy to adjust the weight, a quick turn of the dial lets you choose from 4 to 45 lbs. The proprietary plate locking mechanism is simple but safe. A clicking sound can be heard during some exercises, for most people this is not a problem. More importantly, it is not a sign of that the dumbbells are falling apart.

Five pound increments is not perfect, some more expensive models have 2.5 pound increments, but for most people it is still sufficient. The same goes about the maximum weight, 45 pounds.

The Power-Pak 445 adjustable dumbbells comfortable to use. The grips are made of non-slippery thermoplastic rubber.

One potential drawback with the Universal Power-Pak 445 is that the weight plates are coated in plastic. If you drop the dumbbells onto the floor, the coating may crack. Note that if you drop the dumbbells onto the floor, the warranty is void. (This is true for most adjustable dumbbells)

The Universal Power-Pak 445 Adjustable Dumbbells are backed by a 1 year warranty. You get a stand with the dumbbells, also covered by the 1 year warranty, and a workout guide.

Switching is very fast (you only have to turn the dial on one side and it switches both sides, unlike most adjustable weights, ie. bowflex), and they are very sturdy. I could not reccomend these enough.”

Adjustable Dumbbells Buyer’s Guide

First you need to decide if you should buy an array of traditional dumbbells or a pair of adjustable dumbbells. Traditional dumbbells some advantages, the main advantage is that you don’t need to keep on adding or subracting weight plates. But an array of dumbbells requires a lot of space and is much more expensive than a pair of adjustable dumbbells.

If you don’t have a lot of space or money, adjustable dumbbells is a very good solution. Needless to say, not all adjustable dumbbells are created equal. The main things you should look for when comparing different adjustable dumbbells are mentioned below.

First look at the increments, good adjustable dumbbells use five pound increment or less. If you are working with light weights, look for dumbbells with increments of 2.5 pounds. Note that some adjustable dumbbells sometimes end up with one side slightly heavier than the other. This is not a big problem, you just move your hand so that the dumbbell is balanced. But not everyone likes unbalanced dumbbells, on the other hand some people look at is as an opportunity for additional training.

You also want the dumbbells to cover the whole weight range you need. Unfortunately, the larger the weight range, the larger the increments. Thus, first you work out what weight range you need and then look for adjustable dumbbells covering your weight range with small increments.

Next you should look at how easy it is to change weights. It should be both quick and easy, you don’t want to waste minutes on weight changes in the middle of a workout. Additionally, you want a safe locking mechanism. Few things could be worse than a dumbbell that falls apart during the workout.

Obviously, you want your adjustable dumbbells to last a long time. Solid design is important, you don’t want the dumbbells to break if you put them down a little bit too fast. Dropping adjustable dumbbells onto the floor is not recommended, regardless how sturdy they are. Most adjustable dumbbells come with at least one years warranty, you certainly don’t less than one year.

Price is of course very important, everyone wants good value for their money. You can check our dumbbells reviews to find the best adjustable dumbbells for you.

It is worth pointing out that dumbbells weights don’t need to be round. Round dumbbells can actually be a problem, they may start rolling. One of the most popular adjustable dumbbells are the Powerblocks, which have rectangular weights.
